In the 2013 NFL draft, Kelce was picked by the Chiefs in the third round as the 63rd overall pick. Some scouts had asked questions about his character because of the drug suspension, and Andy Reid, Chiefs head coach asked Jason Kelce, whom he had drafted while Reid was the Eagles head coach, to vouch for his younger brother. Travis afterward selected 87 as a uniform number in honor of the year his brother was born, 1987.
In 2013, Kelce made his NFL debut but played just one game that season because of a knee injury. He returned the next season and achieved his first NFL touchdown in the third game. Travis had 4 other touchdowns that year while recording 862 receiving yards.
