Growing up in Caspar, Wyoming, surrounded by farm animals and arid land, everyday life was an adventure. Further, Sara spent her time camping, exploring mountains, and competing in rodeos. When she was little, her mom was the state’s first female U.S. Marshall which means, she has followed in her footsteps. Sara’s lack of fear, positive attitude, and passion to get on board allowed her to boldly approach anyone who would give her the time of day. This boldness enabled Sara to gain valuable offshore experience and meet the best in the business.
Sara made a name for herself in sailing, a sport often believed “a man’s world.” She competed in the Volvo Ocean Race (VOR) – not only the most competitive and dangerous offshore race in the globe but notoriously dominated by male sailors. That year, for the first time in over 10 years, there was an all-female team competing, and Sara was lucky enough to be a part of it. With the help of her incredible female teammates, they are making waves in this race around the world. Most of her teammates became professional offshore sailors in one of these two ways – but Sara skipped both.
Sara began her profession in the Caribbean, an entirely different kettle of fish to where we are at the moment, right in the middle of the remote Southern Ocean. In 2015, she joined Team SCA. Team SCA is the first all-female team in 10 years to compete in the Volvo Ocean Race, the world’s toughest sailing race.
During her reign as a professional sailor, Sara has sailed the equal of five laps of the planet and has no signs of slowing down. It’s her goal to be the first female ever to sail all seven seas, and climb to the highest summits of the world’s seven continents. This feat would also see Sara become the first person on record to have competed in the Volvo Ocean Race (the ‘Everest of Sailing’) and climbed Everest itself. Thankfully, SPT, her training company is as adaptable to her changing demands as she is as an athlete to her evolving goals. Sara looks forward to their continued partnership as she sets her sights on her next challenge in Paris, this year of 2024.
